Interesting read mainly because there are such strong biases in the writer’s view, so that the he doesn’t seem to feel the need to explain things properly. The post read like someone laughing at the idea of a female Catholic priest, and furthermore, there seems to be an expectation (assuming) that others will laugh accordingly at the ludicrous idea. I didn’t find the article about women priest funny or absurd in any way, but then again I’m not a Catholic or a Christian – so I’m just curious and confused. So, a woman being a priest is ridiculous in this blog post… It makes no sense to me apart from it being the following of tradition, which may have been initially set up because in that context perhaps only men were suitable for priesthood. What would actually make a woman being ordained a priest, bad? What innate difference in men and women stops women from being priests? Yes women an men are obviously different, but how, with regards to being a priest?

Informing and well written. As much I knew that I actually knew next to nothing about Islam, this piece highlighted my ignorance, but also has made me very interested in reading about progressive Islam thought. The site itself is really interesting – should check it out just to get a better understanding of the world if anything: http ://www.muslimwakeup.com.

Again, these kind of writings and explorations, challenge things that are taught as fact (in this case expressed in the news as “fact”) – really cool.

I’m just wondering if this information about women wearing the Hijab (Muslim head scarf) is simply new to me? I’m interested in hearing from someone from the Islamic faith – is this common knowledge to Muslims?

Comm Revolutions

Although the lectures are long, I’m finding the class quite valuable. Some of the areas we are touching on are indirectly relevant to my intended honours project. For example, my script (which I will post more about in the near future) focuses a lot on judgement, and religion and the power held by those who hold knowledge, or rather more accurately, the power held by those who feel they have great knowledge. The film will contain a lot of things, however I would certainly like to explore the ways in which those who think they are right may pass judgement – or those who hold power. It’s quite vague at this point as you can probably tell. Regardless, the definitions of power that we recieved in class with regards to the church in the time prior to the printing press gives me a clearer starting point for research. The idea that a priest who had smuggled a copy of the bible was burned alive is revolting to me but is strangely down the right path for my film research. The talk of “witches” and their treatment (and their reputation) sparks ideas in me for research to give better grounding and some sort of link or relevance to the past for my film, and the main characters. I think their struggles will be modern day mirrors of occurences in the past, because from what I’ve read, the fundamental fabric of how things work hasn’t changed all that much. At this point in time, this is just a bunch of random, generalised mumbo-jumbo, but I thought I’d start writing.
